Koi are colorful domestic mutations of the common carp and are classified into the same genus and species, Cyprinus carpio. Koi are fast growing and can maintain a maximum length of 38 inches. They grow rapidly reaching up to 7 inches in the first year, though optimal growth is dependent upon temperature and proper nutrition. Koi like cool water a from around 16 to 24 degrees Celsius.

There are 14 color varieties typically recognized throughout most of the world, with over 100 color patterns. Not all of these breed true. The recognized varieties are grouped into the Non-Metallic and the Metallic Koi.

Non-metallic Koi Varieties

Kohaku White with red markings	Taisho Sanke White with red and black	Showa sanshoku Black with red and white	Bekko White, red, or yellow with black markings
Utsurimono Black with red, white, or yellow marks	Asagi Pale blue with red belly and fins	Shusui Asagi with doitsu scales	Koromono White with red markings overlaid with a darker pattern

Metallic Koi Varieties

Kinginrin Means golden silvery scales. Usually a kohaku, sanke, or showa color pattern. There are pearl ginrin with a solid sparkling area in center of thickened scales. Or there is flat scaled versions: beta-gin (whole scale shimmers), diamond ginrin (sparkles all over), and kado-gin (scale edges only shine).

Hikarimono (Ogon) Single Colored

Hikari-utsurimono Black with red, white, or yellow markings or with white and red markings

Hikarimoyo-mono Any metallic koi that does not fit into another category

Butterfly Sanke
